    What kept going through my head was what if you modified the shape of the bowl? I don't have the science to know if it would make a difference, but I was surprised that he never tried that, just to see.

    This is such a brilliant experiment!!! Could you please try making holes for air to flow under the impeller? That way air will be sucked in. This might make a parachute effect!

    What if those impellers were a similar shape to the bowls and were facing downwards as the bowl does and were fed with a vortex manifold and/or exhaust.

    You experimented with the different blades but you didn't try different shapes and sizes of the domes and it may be that the curve of the domes is not optimal for maximum thrust downward.

    I like your video, just a suggestion, what if you make a big hole in the center of the dome and install or gradually elevated the impeller inside the hole for each test to catch the reflected air and to push downward so more lift is generated but lesser battery energy used, might reduce the coanda effect for each test, just guessing? Again, I enjoy your video, thanks. :)

    I think that while the conventional propellors would be useful in making it a regular ol drone, the ground effect you get from the scoops might help it be miles more energy efficient by flying it in the ground effect

    This is an awesome example of experimental engineering. Sure, it didn't result in a faster, more efficient, or better drone, but it WAS an interesting exploration of using the coanda effect.     Great work and a sense of humor in the 3D printing example in Simplify3D))) I'm glad that you practically found out for yourself why, for example, the AVRO disk project only flew above the ground. In fact, the Coanda effect is minimal (basically not at all) and everything is provided by the so-called "ground effect".

    U need to b able to cant the hats out a few degs or inward a few degs to really see what u hve got. A mesh hat w/thin tape will b far lighter cloud car. Hving helium filled ballon made of Mylar under each hat will negate the extra wt, for your hover cloud car. Each hat u add say 6 has more helium lift payload advantage over normal drone.

    use curved prop not straight prop so more surface area but not much added wt or larger diameter of spinning blade. Like a curved sword better than straight sword. Copy the 3 blades of best boomerang shape.

    star wars cloud car. cut out golf ball size hole of each propeller hat on each face of dome to lighten load Add a flip up edge to bottom of each hat so u get most bang for buck/effect. Try mesh dome instead of solid dome on the next 1. U can always seal up the mesh w/thin sheet of plastic or sticky tape.

    I think the bowls have the wrong shape as the near-circular curve creates a stall condition. Also, the airflow from each bowl interferes with those of the others and increases pressure at ground level which reduces the airflow. As the craft rises, the airflow at the bowl edges increases and drags air from under the bowl sucking the craft down. I suspect you would be better off having an aerodynamic cross section (i.e. the upper surface of a wing) at a reasonable angle of attack fixed some way above the vehicle like a helicopter's rotor. Put them much further apart and maybe launch from the top of a pole.

    To me, it looks like the uplift comes more from traditional airflow, than coanda-factor. Also, I'd expect a lot of interference between the domes = at least 1.5x the diameter of the domes in between them would look plausible to me?!? On the other hand, big domes also give sensitivity to wind from all sides and needs more counter-steering than "default" multicopters and limit speed (ok, speed is not necessarily the goal) But I like the different approaches of the "impeller" designs (well, these are not really impellers per definition) - one of the few real sense-making uses of 3D-printing I have seen so far. Anyhow: Impressive and we are curious, what effective solutions this development might bring!

    The original impellers were set too high for a dome with such a sharp angle change. You need to set them lower, possibly within a hole or indentation in the top of the dome, so that all of the air has to be funneled around the curve. Make the domes more toroidal in shape?

    Like your videos. you're really good at 3d printing. If you sink the original impellers so that they blow air across inside of the bells then you would gain extra lift through directional thrust and entrainment, just a thought from kgkey.info/block/w4COgpu6pambk2U/video.html electric aircraft designer( around 4min in)

    It appears with the dome over the motor, the cooling effect of air flow is removed as the motors are shield from the air flow by the domes.

    I.... was under an impression that one of the requirements for better thrust was that in addition to the blades pulling air info the system - that there should be additional airflow pulled in by the inbound air - a bit like a turbojet that has a hot section, but also a cold outer area that flows. Unless there is an affect that draws in a decent extra level, hard to see how it will ever elevate above the base thrust of the prop (and in the wider sense this is the challenge of those who propose coanda effect propulsion for flight..) I think the prop flow needs to go down, into the dome, round a corner, draw in extra air, and then flow back up and round the outer surface. The additional air flow pulled in from some form of hole below the dome (which.... would create a lower air pressure below/in dome).. Right now... that drone looks more like its lift is from the upward drive of the blades, rather than being lifted by coanda effect over the surface of the dome.. Fun experiment all the same!!

    Use the printed parts for forms to lay up parts with lighter construction and think on rotor to dome diameter ratio effects on volume/vector of air. Each new approach needs to exploit propeller/rotor design parameters, as well as dome shape. With so many variables you will need more bench work and testing.

    The Avrocar had pretty similar performance! They were hoping to build the “jeep of the air” which flew on the Coanda effect, but they never flew out of the ground effect.

    So the issue there was air flow. I think if you were to make the impellers larger so they could draw mora air you may have an easier time getting it up

    sooo, you took a "regular" drone that could lift off with probably 20% power to a coanda effect drone that needs 100% power just to get off the ground. insert slow clap here. but seriously I applaud the effort and talent you demonstrated trying this. it's too bad it isn't more efficient because it sure looks cool.

    Good video Tom. Your initial thrust tests basically predicted the outcome. I imagine the Coanda effect loses efficiency since there must be an outward thrust component, and not all of the thrust is directed downwards as it the case with a propeller. You might want to revisit this with redesigning the bowls into a similar shape as the Dyson fan, which is based on the same principle. Cheers from Canada.

    Since you already have rounded shapes in the design, I wonder if you could fill them with hot air or helium, heated by the motors. It wouldn't affect the aerodynamics especially at the slow speeds, but it would decrease the weight.

    Given that the effect causes thrust to drop down 10x, is there a better use for this effect (like thrust vectoring)? Use conventional propellers for normal operations, but use the effect for thrust vectoring for finer control
